Application overview
Cellular and BWA (Broadband Wireless Access) networks such as GSM, CDMA, 3G and WiMAX deploy point-to-point digital microwave radio systems for long-distance backhaul from remote base stations back into core networks. The radio backhaul enables operators to extend their network coverage and services for remote subscribers. The systems are typically deployed where wired, fiber and high-frequency microwave backhaul solutions are not viable or commercially feasible due to low densities, distance, difficult terrain and harsh environments.

Applications:
Carrier Networks
» Cellular and BWA Networks
Mobile Radio Networks
DSL Extension
Private Networks
Rural Broadband Access
Utility Networks

Commercial perspectives
This microwave radio solution enables cellular and BWA network operators the flexibility to [1] evolve their infrastructure and extend reach and coverage to remote or low–density areas [2] cost-effectively meet expanding backhaul and distribution needs [3] assert their market positioning and acquire subscribers in remote locations [4] replace E1/T1 leased services to grow revenue streams and secure independence from incumbent operators.

Aprisa™ digital microwave radios
The 4RF Communications Aprisa digital microwave radios enable connectivity between two fixed points up to 100 kilometres apart for the transmission of Internet, voice and data traffic. They provide E1/T1 and/or Ethernet 100Base-T backhaul from remote cellular and BWA base stations. The in-built cross-connect enables drop-insert of individual timeslots and the aggregation of traffic from multiple sites without the use of external equipment.

Aprisavantage
The Aprisa radio confers two key benefits to cellular and BWA network operators requiring backhaul and distribution services to remote sites.

Superior performance Sub 3 GHz licensed frequency bands enable extremely reliable transmission over long distances and difficult terrain, particularly over water and partly obscured paths. This eliminates large and expensive antennas, diversity systems or repeater sites reducing deployment time and cost. The regulated bands permit exclusive frequency assignment guaranteeing carrier-class performance and minimizing interference. The RF design integrates high-performance digital processing techniques including FEC (Forward Error Correction), interleaving, and advanced radio equalization to minimize transmission degradation from interference and atmospheric effects. Sophisticated modulation techniques in the radio platform enable highly efficient transmission in narrow channels. This enables the optimisation of available spectrum where that resource may be limited and/ or expensive.

Greater flexibility The design of the Aprisa enables swift network integration and redeployment. The radio features an in-built multiplexer managing Ethernet, voice and data traffic. This reduces costs by eliminating the requirement for external equipment. Advanced plug-in, customer-configurable interface modules include circuit-switched E1/T1 transport and packet-switched IP/Ethernet to support both legacy and next generation network elements eliminating redundancy concerns.
